Weekly Update: New Judgment
New Judgment: Supplementary Notes on Camp
We’ve been tinkering around with ideas for what our Judgments section might include other than film reviews. Specifically, we’ve been wanting to do something relatively light, but also with that tinge of artsy fartsiness that we like to sprinkle over things. That’s what we posted a few days ago.
After some conversations about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and campy horror in general, Eric decided to re-read Susan Sontag’s classic 1966 essay, “Notes on Camp.” He was surprised to realize she hardly even mentions horror as one of the great standard-bearers of Camp. Well, no one ever actually asked for Eric’s supplementary opinions on Sontag’s opinions, but he’s giving it to you anyway.
Upcoming Dissection: Perfect Blue
We haven’t forgotten our promise to dive into Perfect Blue, Satoshi Kon’s classic anime that is, essentially, a masterpiece of psychological horror. Meg’s hard at work on it now, and you can expect the article to drop in the next few weeks.
Upcoming Fables
We’re also still plugging away at artwork and editing for two upcoming fables. Look for those in the next few weeks as well.
One More Thing
In redefining our Judgments section, we’ve realized that we want it to become a new space to publish short essays from other authors about horror media. We’re still interested in reviews, but we’re also looking for personal essays and cultural criticism. We’ll put together submission guidelines and a submission form soon. For now, though, if you have an idea, send us a pitch using our Contact form.
