Weekly Update: From the Mouths of Mad Folk
We're Doing Updates Now!
We've been growing and changing a lot lately, both behind the scenes and right out in public, so we started thinking we ought to do weekly updates. That way, you good people get a better sense of what we're doing, what we're planning to do, and when we're planning to release stuff we done did.
Plus, you get this somewhat less filtered voice from us, which the internet tells us is what the internet likes from content creators. These days, if you wanna sell out like a Hollywood phony, you gotta be ever more real.
So that's your first update: we're doing updates now.
New Fable for the Dying: "A Mother's Love"
Last Sunday (Mother's Day) we published a Fable by our new friend Emma Louise Gill: "A Mother's Love" is a warped and twisted retelling of a classic fairytale. Emma writes speculative and flash fiction. She's been published in AntipodeanSF, Curiouser Magazine, Etherea Magazine, and others. She also blogs about life and writing and publishes occasional book reviews and original creative work over at EmmaLouiseGill.com. We're proud to get to showcase her work here.
The Cabinet of Desire
A couple weeks ago, we quietly published a new online store called the Cabinet of Desire. Right now, the inventory is light, but it'll grow over time, as Eric keeps producing weird, creepy images and slapping them on t-shirts and whatnot. The money we pick up there will help us maintain and continue to grow the Other Folk, pay contributors, and (maybe one day) pay ourselves.
Patreon Tier Adjustments
We created our Patreon tiers about a year ago, when we first launched the Other Folk. They were fine back then, but we can do better now. Below are the revised benefits you'll get if you patronize the dark arts. One notable change is that we’re now offering discounts on Cabinet purchases for all patron tiers.*
Occult-Curious ($1/month) - Early access to posts and 10% off at the Cabinet.
Believer ($5/month) - Early access to posts, Fables for the Dying bookmark, Dissected Head mug, and 10% off at the Cabinet.
Heretic ($10/month) - Early access to posts, FftD bookmark, one of these sweet Other Folk t-shirts, and 15% off at the Cabinet.
Blasphemer ($15/month) - Early access to posts, FftD bookmark, Other Folk hoodie, %15 off at the Cabinet.
Dark Disciple ($20/month) - Early access to posts, FftD bookmark, Other Folk hoodie, one gift of your choice from the Cabinet, and 20% off at the Cabinet.
As with Cabinet sales, our patrons will be helping us grow the site, pay our contributors, and eventually pay ourselves.
Upcoming Content
Partly as a result of work on the Cabinet, partly due to all the behind-the-scenes work, partly due to other life stuff, this is where we've been slowing down. Thing is, though, we're happier with what's basically become a bi-weekly release schedule. It gives us more time to polish our Dissections, which sometimes go over 3,000 words. It also gives us more time to read Fable submissions and edit the ones we want to publish. Besides, we know the internet says you're all content-hungry monsters, but we're pretty sure our readers are patient folks--smart folks who prefer quality over quantity.
We're not giving a firm release schedule because, well, the stuff we write takes time. That's quality over quantity for you. But here's what we're currently cooking up and planning to publish over the next couple of months:
Dissections - We're still cranking away at our series on animated horror. Next in queue is an article about Watership Down, the 1978 film that traumatized a generation of kids in the best way possible.
Judgments - This is one thing we can promise will release next week. For a while there, we had this idea that we should only write reviews of new media. We've changed our minds. Expect more Judgments in general, as well as more Judgments about older stuff, especially stuff related to other content we're publishing. (Get the hint?)
Fables for the Dying - We have another Fable in the pipeline from another new friend of the Other Folk. We're going to start editing and artworking pretty soon, so you can expect that to come out sometime next month.
* An earlier version of this post included mention of a new "Friend of the Other Folk (Contributors)" Patreon tier for writers who contribute their work to early access to all of our posts, a handwritten postcard with original Other Folk artwork, and 10% off at the Cabinet of Desire. Unfortunately, Patreon does not have infrastructure to allow for a free tier. We're working on a simple solution. Meanwhile, if you're a contributor, shoot us a message, and we'll give you that 10% hookup.
